Everyone at Belong Wigan would like to wish resident Lily Houghton a Happy 100th Birthday!
The team would also like to thank the local community for sending in cards for Lily in response to a community callout on social media last month to share birthday wishes.
A total of 248 cards were sent in for Lily's big day, including a card from a lady with the same name living in Utah, USA; another from her nephew she hasn't seen for 50 years; and of course, one from Her Majesty The Queen.
Lily was born and raised in Huyton, Merseyside, and upon leaving school worked as a housemaid. She later worked at BICC in nearby Prescot where she met her future husband, Bill.
Aged 23, she married and the couple were blessed with a son, Barry, two years later in 1947. After 69 years of wedded bliss, Bill sadly died in 2014, aged 96, and is dearly missed by the family.
Fiercely independent, Lily remained in her home until 2020 when she moved into Belong Wigan, a CQC-rated 'Outstanding' care village in Platt Bridge.
Speaking of her centenary, Lily said: “Gosh, I hadn’t realised – I thought I was just a little over 21!" and speaking of her cards: "Thank you all so much, God bless you all."
Charlene Frodsham, experience coordinator at Belong Wigan, said: “We wanted to do something extra special for Lily’s birthday, after all, how many people turn 100?
"It’s an amazing achievement to live this long, so we thought we’d do a shout-out so the community could join the celebrations.”
